P-plater accused of running from police to avoid drink-driving breath test

A teenage P-plater from the north-west has lost his licence through to the middle of the new year after being caught drink driving and allegedly running from police.

Officers were called to the waterfront area at South Burnie near the Burnie Yacht Club around 4pm on Wednesday following reports of “hooning” vehicles.

The young driver was reportedly “speeding” when he was approached by police, before he ran off from his vehicle.

Tasmania Police said the 19-year-old was later caught up to on foot after a failed attempt to outrun the officers.

A breath test revealed the teenager had a blood alcohol level of 0.012, 0.24 times above the zero limit for provisional licence holders.

He has lost his licence for six month, been charged with drink driving and aggravated evade and will appear in court next year.
