A young P-plater has lost his licence for 12 months after police found his car crashed into a guard rail in Hobart’s northern suburbs early this morning.
Police came across the vehicle on Main Road at Claremont around 1:20am on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Hobart man took a breath test and allegedly returned a reading of 0.227 – more than four times the legal limit for a full licence holder.
As a provisional driver, he was not allowed to have any alcohol in his system.
Police disqualified him from driving on the spot for 12 months. He was also charged and bailed to face court at a later date.
Inspector Jason Klug said the man had shown a “blatant disregard” for the safety of other road users.
“Driving after consuming alcohol significantly impairs judgement, reaction times and decision-making ability, putting lives at risk,” he said.
“There is simply no excuse for getting behind the wheel after drinking.”
It comes after a random breath-testing operation on nearby Berriedale Road on Friday night also caught two drink-drivers and a person driving with a suspended licence.
Another driver allegedly evaded police during the operation, with the vehicle later found and seized.
“We urge all motorists to plan ahead and make safe choices,” Klug said.
