'Crashed and rolled': Elderly man airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after ATV crash near Strahan

Updated 6:30pm, Saturday: An elderly man is fighting for his life after the ATV he was riding crashed and rolled on a West Coast beach this morning.

The 81-year-old man was a passenger in a side-by-side ATV that rolled at Macquarie Heads, near Strahan, around 11:15am on Saturday.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the ATV crashed and rolled on the beach before landing on the water’s edge,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson said.

The man was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition with serious injuries.

The 36-year-old driver was also taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said emergency services were alerted by members of the public who found the vehicle “partially submerged” in the water.

The crash occurred during the Easter long weekend. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.

Emergency services responded to the single-vehicle incident near the Macquarie Heads campground, just outside Strahan, on Saturday afternoon.

Police said two people were involved in the crash. One person suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

A second person, who also sustained serious injuries, is being transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital by road.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are not yet known.
