Thousands of anti-stadium protestors have filled Hobart’s parliament lawns this afternoon in a bid to ‘stop the stadium’.
The crowd argue that funds set aside for a $750 million stadium at Macquarie Point should instead be directed towards housing, health and education.
The anti-stadium rally was chaired by the author Richard Flanagan, with other speakers addressing the crowd, including Senator Jacqui Lambie, Greens leader Cassy O’Connor, Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, independent Nelson MLC Meg Webb and independent Clark MP Andrew Wilkie.
The proposed stadium is set to be built on Hobart’s waterfront, and recently received a boost from the Albanese government, which committed $240m to the project in the 2023-24 federal budget.
The state government has already pledged $375m towards the stadium, with an additional $15m to come from the AFL.
