Police have seized $100,000 in cash after two men allegedly tried to flee officers during a traffic stop in Hobart’s northern suburbs last week.

Detectives from Bridgewater Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) tried to pull over a vehicle on Scarlett Lane around 2pm on May 13 over what police described as “a traffic matter”.

Police allege the driver sped off before stopping on McShane Road.

One man stayed with the car, while a front-seat passenger allegedly ran from the scene.

Police later found the man outside a home in the McShane Road area and took him into custody.

“Police allege the man had a bag in his possession at the time which contained five, vacuum-sealed plastic bags, each containing bundles of $20,000 in cash,” a spokesperson said.

“Police suspect the $100,000 may be connected to the procurement, sale and distribution of illicit drugs in southern Tasmania.”

The arrests prompted further searches of a Bridgewater property and two hotel rooms in Hobart.

A 50-year-old Bridgewater man has been charged with dealing with proceeds of crime, obstructing a police officer, supplying a controlled drug and failing to wear a seatbelt as a passenger.

A 67-year-old Lenah Valley man faces charges including evading police in aggravated circumstances, resisting a police officer, driving without a licence and possessing a controlled drug.

“Investigations into the matter are continuing,” police said.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000.”
