A large crowd of over 4,500 racegoers turned up for the annual Devonport Cup at the Spreyton Racecourse on Thursday.
The event, which has faced financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic in recent years, was a marked success for the Devonport Racing Club.
Swoop Dog took out first place, while Alpine Wolf came second and Dramazing came third.
Club chairman Barry Milton praised the turnout and the beautiful weather, stating that the atmosphere at the racecourse was simply stunning. Milton also acknowledged the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the club, saying “With the COVID restrictions over the two years, we’ve run big losses.”
But despite the hardships, the Devonport Racing Club remained determined to host the event, and it paid off with many patrons returning to support the Cup this year, a welcome sight after last year’s 50% drop in attendance.
Attendees not only got to enjoy the thrill of the races, but also the positive and well-behaved atmosphere at the racecourse. Milton praised the crowd’s behavior, saying “I think everyone realizes it’s a fun event, and you can enjoy yourselves, but make sure you do it responsibly.”
