The Department of State Growth says it is already ‘tuning’ new traffic lights at Montrose after delays built up on the Brooker Highway in their first evening peak.
The signals at the intersection of the Brooker Highway, Foreshore Road and Duncan Street were switched on Tuesday morning, marking the end of a $9 million safety upgrade.
By Tuesday evening’s peak, motorists were reporting long queues after Elwick Road heading through the northern suburbs.
Labor Derwent MLC Craig Farrell flagged the issue on social media.

“I think there might be some more work needed at the new Montrose Bay intersection,” Farrell said.
“The traffic ‘flow’ has been reduced to a drip.”

“Hopefully this is just a teething issue and not another block on the under capacity Brooker.”
A Department of State Growth spokesperson told Pulse the delays had been noted.
“We are aware of delays on the Brooker Highway near Montrose yesterday evening,” the spokesperson said.
“New traffic light systems often require refinement to optimise traffic flow.”

“We have already made changes to improve traffic flow on the Brooker Highway and we will continue to monitor the intersection and make improvements where necessary to keep traffic flowing.”
The upgrade was jointly funded by the federal and state governments.
The intersection serves Montrose Bay High School, the Montrose Bay Foreshore Park, Glenorchy Rowing Club and Montrose Yacht Club.
Before installation, the department said the new signals would be synchronised with other Brooker Highway intersections to maintain flow along the corridor.
