Tasmania now has one of the world’s most highly rated hotels, with Saffire Freycinet at Coles Bay promoted to Three Michelin Keys in the guide’s 2026 selection.
It is one of only three Australian properties to hold the top mark, which Michelin reserves for “an extraordinary stay”.
The promotion puts the east coast retreat alongside Queensland’s Lizard Island Resort and Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge.
Michelin described Saffire as “a sleek, contemporary retreat nestled among Tasmania’s rugged east coast bushland”.
Inspectors praised its 20 suites, local design touches and tailored nature experiences.
Tasmania also picked up a new entry, with The Corinda Collection in Hobart awarded One Michelin Key.
That takes the state to six Michelin Key hotels in total.
The others are MACq 01 Hotel, The Henry Jones Art Hotel, The Islington Hotel and The Tasman, all in Hobart.
Only New South Wales, with 18 and Victoria and Queensland, with eight each, have more.
Tasmania is level with South Australia on six, ahead of Western Australia on three and the Northern Territory on one.
The Michelin Key is the hotel version of the Michelin Star.
Anonymous inspectors review thousands of hotels around the world against five measures: design, quality of service, unique character, value for money and what the property gives back to its local area.
Hotels can earn up to three keys.
One key means “a very special stay”, two means “an exceptional stay” and three means “an extraordinary stay”.
The awards launched in Australia last year with 35 properties.
The 2026 list adds 22 new hotels and three promotions, lifting the national total to 54.
