Hobart City Council is still investigating a sinkhole that opened up at Long Beach Reserve in Sandy Bay 11 days ago, with specialist assessments revealing damage to underground infrastructure beneath the foreshore.
The sinkhole was first spotted by a member of the public on August 13, prompting the council to fence off the area.
In an update, the council said crews are now working to determine the full extent of the damage and the best way to fix it.
“Specialist assessments have identified damage to underground infrastructure beneath the foreshore and crews are working to determine the full extent of the issue and the most appropriate repair approach,” the council said.
The fencing will stay in place while investigations and repair planning continue.
“For community safety, the affected area will remain fenced off while investigations and repair planning continue,” the council said.
Long Beach itself remains open, with the public able to walk around the affected section.
The playground and barbecue sites are also still accessible.
When the sinkhole first appeared, the council’s parks team confirmed it was tunnelling back towards the beach.
Engineers were called in to assess the problem and the council urged dog owners to keep their pets on leads in the area.
The council said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
