JackJumpers head coach Scott Roth has been signed by the state government as a Tasmanian ambassador on a $95,000 contract.
The 13-month deal with the Department of State Growth runs until April 30, 2027.
Under the agreement, Roth will promote Tasmania’s “unique offerings” across sport, tourism, trade, investment and culture through speaking engagements, mentoring and awareness-raising work.
Because the contract falls just under $100,000, the government was able to hand-pick Roth without putting the role out to open tender.
The deal was raised multiple times during question time in parliament on Tuesday, with Labor leader Josh Willie questioning Tourism Minister Jane Howlett about its timing and if it was a “taxpayer funded handout”.

Willie asked how the government had found the money for a basketball coach ambassador after announcing 250 job cuts at State Growth.
He also questioned who signed off on the contract, whether it was approved before or after the job cuts were announced and if it was “deliberately” kept under the $100,000 tender threshold.
Howlett said “all appropriate procurement processes” had been followed.
“Mr Roth’s profile, experience and enthusiasm for Tasmania make him perfect for the ambassador role,” she said.
“He has a unique ability to tell the Tasmanian story.”

Howlett said Roth had already delivered two speaking engagements in partnership with Brand Tasmania, with more scheduled.
She said none of the ambassador duties would overlap with his JackJumpers coaching commitments.
Pressed on the timing, Howlett said the contract had been signed off before the job cuts were announced, but she would need to seek advice on the exact date.
Treasurer Eric Abetz, also asked about the appointment, said the $95,000 contract “would not even save one job” at State Growth.
“The investment of a brand ambassador for Tasmania helps promote our state, helps promote our economy, helps promote opportunities for our state from which every single Tasmanian will actually benefit.”
Roth, who coined the ‘defend the island’ catchphrase, said it was a humbling honour to take on the role.
