Tasmanian JackJumpers head coach Scott Roth has been named the state’s first biosecurity ambassador, fronting a Tasmanian government campaign that urges people to follow the “biosecurity basics”.
The awareness campaign asks Tasmanians to make the most of the state’s “home court advantage” by checking their bags, coming in clean, staying on the path and reporting anything unusual.
Primary industries and Water Minister Gavin Pearce said Roth was one of Tasmania’s most recognised and respected community leaders.
“Scott’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life is second to none and I couldn’t be happier to announce him as our inaugural Biosecurity Ambassador,” he said.

“Biosecurity is vitally important to our island state and it’s a responsibility that falls to all of us.”
“We want to see more people in the community understand the important role they play in safeguarding what makes our state special.”

“Whether you’re travelling, exploring the outdoors or out on farms, do the biosecurity basics.”
Roth said he was proud to support an issue that affected every Tasmanian.
“When I arrived in Tasmania, one of the things that immediately stood out was how passionate people are about this place,” he said.
“Whether it’s our environment, our industries, our communities or our way of life, there is so much worth protecting.”

“In basketball, we know that winning starts with the basics. Success comes from teamwork, preparation and everyone doing their job. Biosecurity is no different.”
The biosecurity position forms part of Roth’s broader role as Tasmanian Ambassador.
In May, the state government signed Roth to that role on a 13-month, $95,000 contract with the Department of State Growth (now Building Tasmania), which runs until April 30, 2027.
Labor leader Josh Willie questioned the deal in parliament at the time, while then Tourism Minister Jane Howlett said “all appropriate procurement processes” had been followed.
According to the government, future campaigns will focus on community awareness, preparedness and education and will showcase the people who work behind the scenes to protect the state every day.
