Thunderstorms are rolling through Bass Strait and bearing down on Tasmania’s north and north-east, prompting warnings from emergency services.

The Tasmania SES issued an alert on Sunday as the storm system moved towards the state’s northern regions.

“Thunderstorms can produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding,” the SES said.

A broad trough extending down from the mainland is driving the unsettled conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast isolated thunderstorms across the north and the Furneaux Islands, with storms possibly extending to the south and east during the afternoon and evening.

Showers are expected to become more widespread across the north during the afternoon before clearing from the west late on Sunday.

Calmer conditions are forecast for Monday and Tuesday, with mostly fine weather and light coastal showers expected.

Another front is set to arrive on Wednesday, bringing scattered showers statewide and possible thunderstorms to the south-west.

The SES has urged residents to avoid floodwaters, seek shelter indoors, and prepare for possible power outages.
