Burnie City Council has appointed Shane Crawford as its new General Manager, effective from December 2024.
Crawford is currently the General Manager of Waratah-Wynyard Council, a position he has held for the past seven years.
He began his local government career with Burnie City Council in 2004 and held various roles during his five-year tenure, including Director of Corporate Services.
Deputy Mayor Giovanna Simpson said Crawford has “a deep and practical understanding of local government in the region”.
“Mr Crawford was selected by councillors for the role after his successful leadership of the WWC has led to effective financial management while still delivering upon all of council’s core responsibilities, in addition to developing new projects of significance for the Waratah-Wynyard area,” she said.
Crawford said the decision to leave Waratah-Wynyard was a “tough one”, having formed strong relationships with councillors, staff and the community.
“Whilst I’m excited to take on a new challenge and look forward to leading Burnie City Council into what I believe will be a period of positive change and reinvigoration, leaving Waratah Wynyard Council was not an easy decision to make,” he said.
“This community has such a positive attitude and you can see the collective pride. It’s just a great place, and I really enjoy the uniqueness of all of our communities.”
Current Burnie General Manager Simon Overland will retire on November 3, the fourth anniversary of his appointment.
