A diver has been airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital after being bitten by a shark off Bruny Island in Tasmania’s south this morning.

The 31-year-old man was diving with two others at a depth of about eight metres, around 50 metres offshore at Coal Point in Adventure Bay, on Saturday.

Police believe he was bitten by a two-metre broadnose sevengill shark.

The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his lower forearm and was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter in a stable condition.

Inspector Darren Latham said the diver was able to make his way back to shore, where he was helped by fellow divers who contacted emergency services at 9:10am.

The police vessel Dauntless is patrolling the area, but there have been no further sightings of the shark.

“While this appears to be an isolated incident, we are reminding anyone planning to swim or dive in the area to remain vigilant, follow local safety advice and be aware of their surroundings,” Inspector Latham said.

Anyone who spots a shark in the area should call police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000).
