Six charged over burglaries, assaults and drug offences in southern Tasmania

Detectives in Tasmania’s south-east have charged six people over a string of burglaries, assaults, drug offences and a firearm incident across the region’s south.

The South East Criminal Investigations Branch laid the charges yesterday as part of ongoing investigations into crimes committed across southern Tasmania.

Detective Inspector David Gill said the branch’s detectives were focused on holding offenders to account.

“Our detectives are committed to investigating crimes, and bringing charges against those people who choose to commit offences in our community,” he said.

A 15-year-old boy from Bridgewater was hit with the most charges, facing four counts of burglary, one of attempted burglary, five of stealing, five of motor vehicle stealing, one of trespass and four of driving while disqualified.

Police allege the burglaries targeted a golf club in the Richmond area, service stations in Lindisfarne and Lauderdale, a retail business in Northgate and vehicles where cash, alcohol and collector cards were taken.

The offences were allegedly committed using the stolen cars.

He was detained to appear in court.

A 16-year-old boy from Herdsmans Cove was charged with six counts of motor vehicle stealing and was also detained to appear in court.

A 25-year-old Huonville man was charged with burglary and stealing over an alleged break-in at a Blackmans Bay restaurant where cash was taken.

He was detained to appear in court.

A 42-year-old Rokeby man was charged with firearm and drug offences after police allegedly found a firearm and drugs during a targeted search of a home in Rokeby.

He was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

A 17-year-old from Clarendon Vale was charged with aggravated robbery over an alleged assault on a known youth in the Midway Point area on May 28.

He was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

A 37-year-old Sorell man was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly pointing a firearm at two people known to him who were sitting in a car stopped behind him at traffic lights in Lindisfarne on May 6.

The firearm wasn’t discharged and no one was injured.

He was detained to appear in court.
