Bushwalkers are being warned to stay off peaks in Tasmania’s west on Thursday evening as snow is expected to fall as low as 1,000 metres.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued the alert on Wednesday morning, advising that “hazardous conditions” would hit the western forecast district.
A cold front crossing the state from the west is driving the wild weather.
Widespread showers are forecast across Tasmania today, with thunderstorms possible along coastal areas.
The bureau warned “damaging winds” were possible in storms about the western coasts.
Snow is expected in the southwest during Thursday evening, with showers persisting in the west and south.
The rest of the state should see mostly fine conditions tomorrow.
A ridge of high pressure will extend over Tasmania from Friday, bringing settled weather through the weekend.
