Snow could fall to as low as 600 metres across Tasmania on Thursday as the coldest blast of autumn sweeps the state, with up to eight centimetres tipped to settle on the Central Plateau.

A cold front will cross Tasmania on Wednesday evening, dragging a cold southwesterly stream behind it for Thursday and Friday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The bureau’s forecast issued Tuesday says showers will fall as snow to 600 metres on Thursday morning before contracting to the west and far south during the day.

Fresh and gusty southwesterly winds will follow on Friday, with showers mainly about the west and far south.

A morning frost is possible about the north-east.

Hobart is forecast to reach a top of just 13 degrees on Thursday.

Weatherzone said snow could fall lower than initially expected.

“With the freezing level set to hover around 1,000 metres during Thursday, this could see snow falling to as low as 800 metres about Victoria and Tasmania,” Weatherzone said.

Weatherzone said a second cold front early Friday would extend the cold and gusty conditions, with snow flurries possible on higher peaks into Saturday morning.

Weatherzone said snow accumulations of about three to eight centimetres about the Central Plateau “should be ample snow cover for snow play, snowball fights and maybe a slide on a toboggan”.

Temperatures are forecast to ease back towards May averages early next week.
