South Hobart head coach Pete Edwards will leave the club at the end of its current Australian Championship campaign, after a season in which the club won Tasmania’s top league and its first match on the national stage.

The club announced on Thursday that Edwards had told it he would depart at the end of the 2026 championships to pursue a new opportunity. The new role was not named.

This year, South Hobart won the NPL Championship and the NPL Finals Series to qualify for the Australian Championship.

Last month, it became the first Tasmanian club to win a match in the national competition, beating Brisbane’s Lions FC 2-1 away from home in round one.

Edwards said he was “incredibly proud” of what the club had achieved.

“From winning the NPL Championship and Finals Series to carrying that momentum onto the national stage and securing a historic victory for Tasmanian football against Lions FC, it’s been a remarkable season and one I’ll always look back on with immense pride,” he said.

He thanked the players, his coaching staff and those who had helped him behind the scenes. He said his focus remained on the rest of the campaign.

“We’ve achieved something special together this season and I’m determined to see it through to the very end,” he said.

Edwards previously worked at Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners. He joined South Hobart for the final three games of last year’s championships after former coach Max Clarke left.

The Australian Championships is a national community club competition that effectively serves as soccer’s second tier, between the A-League and the state leagues.

South Hobart said the search for its next head coach would start immediately. The club thanked Edwards for his contribution and wished him “every success in the next chapter of his coaching career”.

The team’s next match is against Lions FC on Sunday at 3pm.
