Tasmania’s top women’s football competition will have a new name next season, with seven clubs set to contest the rebranded Women’s Premier League in 2027.
Football Tasmania announced the Women’s Super League would become the Women’s Premier League (WPL) from the 2027 season. The new name was the preferred option after the football community was consulted on a range of proposed names.
The 2027 competition will feature Devonport City Strikers, Glenorchy Knights, Kingborough Lions United, Launceston City, Launceston United, South Hobart and Taroona.
Football Tasmania has set a target of returning to an eight-team competition in 2028.

Football Tasmania chief executive Tony Pignata said the new name better reflected the competition’s standing.
“The Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be the highest level of women’s club football in the state and we believe the new name better reflects the importance and status of the competition,” he said.

“Our focus is on building a strong, competitive and sustainable league that provides opportunities for female players to develop and compete at the highest level in Tasmania.”
Beyond expansion, the organisation has a longer-term ambition for the WPL to become part of Australia’s National Premier Leagues (NPL) framework.
Pignata said reaching that status would require the competition to meet specific criteria and standards. Football Tasmania would work with clubs to strengthen structures and improve standards on and off the field.
“Our goal is to provide Tasmanian female footballers with a genuine National Premier Leagues pathway here in Tasmania,” he said.

Over the next 12 months, the governing body will work with clubs across the state to identify expansion opportunities and support those with the ambition and capacity to compete at the top level.
Football Tasmania will also finalise arrangements with the seven participating clubs ahead of the 2027 season while talking to other clubs interested in joining in 2028.
