A house fire that sent “toxic smoke” across Hobart’s northern suburbs has been put out, with flames visible for kilometres as crews fought to contain the blaze.
Tasmania Fire Service crews were called to Karingi Court in West Moonah just before 6:30pm on Monday, where a home became well alight.
All occupants were evacuated from the property and police said there was no risk to other homes in the area.
Amy Street was closed near Karingi Court while emergency services worked at the scene.
Police warned residents to stay away because of the toxic smoke and a smoke alert was issued for the area.
“There is no threat to the general public. People who don’t need to be in the immediate area should stay away,” the fire service said.
Residents were told they could “avoid exposure to smoke by staying indoors, closing windows, vents and doors and turning heat pumps and air conditioners to recirculate or off”.
The fire has since been extinguished and Amy Street has reopened to traffic.
Police believe the fire started in the kitchen. Fire scene investigators will examine the scene on Tuesday.
