The Tasmania Devils have assembled a panel of Tasmanian musicians, artists and football identities to create the club’s official song ahead of its AFL and AFLW debut in 2028.
The eight-member panel will be led by Devils CEO Brendon Gale, who was also guitarist of a band in the 1990s called Trial By Video, and will bring together a mix of sporting and creative voices to help shape the anthem.
The panel includes Tasmanian performing arts figure John X, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra CEO Caroline Sharpen, DarkLab CEO Leigh Carmichael, Tasmanian AFL great Matthew Richardson, Devils VFLW co-captain Meghan Gaffney, Music Tasmania chair Tony Fox and Melbourne Press Club CEO Patrick Donovan.
The club said the process for selecting the song, including how fans will be able to submit their own songs for consideration, will be shared publicly once it has been finalised.
Gaffney said she was excited to be part of a panel bringing together Tasmania’s football and music communities.
“I’m so excited to be part of this panel,” she said.
“The opportunity to combine my passion for football, music and my home state is something really special.
“We will be singing this after wins for years to come and I cannot wait to work alongside such incredible Tasmanians to help bring it to life.”
The Devils have been using an interim song during their inaugural VFL and VFLW seasons, with the tune based on the Australian classic Along the Road to Gundagai.
Tasmanian band The Wolfe Brothers have helped players become more familiar with the song, holding a vocal session at training ahead of a VFL match.
The club said having an original anthem in place before entering the AFL and AFLW in 2028 remained a key priority.
