Sub-zero surprise: Tasmania wakes to freezing conditions as temperatures plummet

Frost has settled across parts of Tasmania this morning as the state woke to sub-zero temperatures.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Thursday marked one of the coldest mornings of 2024 in Tasmania, with a low of -1.5°C recorded at Liawenee around 12:09am.

Temperatures on the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington remained around 1 degree for most of the morning, with a ‘feels like’ temperature averaging -9°C.

Tunnack in the Southern Midlands also experienced a very chilly morning, with the temperature getting down to -0.3°C.

The BOM is predicting possible morning inland fog and frost across the state on Friday and Saturday before a cold front approaches on Sunday.

The lowest temperature recorded in Tasmania this year was -2.8°C at Liawenee on January 30.
