A young Tasmanian footballer from Launceston is set to live out his lifelong dream when he makes his AFL debut for St Kilda tonight.
19-year-old Arie Schoenmaker will become the third Tasmanian to play their first game this season, following Colby McKercher at North Melbourne and Ryley Sanders at the Western Bulldogs.
The 194cm defender discovered he’d be playing while surrounded by teammates after Wednesday’s training session, with VFL coach Jake Batchelor announcing the news.
Schoenmaker was told the news of his selection by Sandringham’s VFL coach Jake Batchelor after Wednesday’s training session, with his teammates gathered around.
Taken with pick No. 62 at last year’s draft, the Saints say the Launceston native’s “strength, speed and thumping boot” will all come into play as the team looks to secure itssixth win for the season prior to the mid-season bye.
“Arie has worked hard to earn his spot and we’re excited to see him take this opportunity at AFL level,” General Manager of Football David Misson said.
St Kilda will face Brisbane at the Gabba tonight, with the first bounce at 7:40pm.
