Tasmanian Jonty Lunson has pulled off a stunning comeback to win the 2026 Queensland Amateur Championship at Beerwah Golf Club, fighting back from four down after seven holes to defeat local hope Harrison Gomez in extra holes.
The 19-year-old Devonport Golf Club member made four bogeys in the first six holes of the final before turning the match on its head on Friday.
“I was four over par, I made four bogeys in the first six holes, so kinda just the thought that he’s not really winning, I was more losing,” Lunson told Pulse.
“Kinda just waiting for a little bit of confidence to come back.”
That confidence arrived in a hurry, with Lunson birdieing holes seven, eight, 10, 11 and 12 to claw back to one down.
A birdie on 17 squared the match before Gomez sank a clutch 10-footer on 18 to force sudden death.
“I was kinda … not deflated, but it was a bit of a momentum shift,” Lunson said.
Both players traded pars on the 19th and 20th holes before Gomez made a mistake on 21, leaving a putt eight feet short.
Lunson also came up short from further out but converted from six feet to clinch victory.
“I stayed patient, didn’t try and do anything special,” he said.
“Just sorta trusted my own game.”
The title is Lunson’s second World Amateur Golf Ranking victory in as many months, following his Singapore Open Amateur Championship win in July.
Gomez finished runner-up to Lunson by a shot in Singapore as well.
“He’s a good mate though, so probably wouldn’t call it a rivalry,” Lunson said.
Lunson completed seven rounds of golf in five days across the stroke play and match play components.
He finished tied for fifth in qualifying before beating Mitchell Salmond 2&1, Christopher Filipowicz 4&3 and Kade Bryant 4&3 to reach the final.
He is flying straight out this morning to represent Australia at the Nomura Cup in China.
“[I] don’t really have any time to sort of take it in,” he said.
