TasWater is investigating deliberate attacks on two major water infrastructure sites that supply drinking water to greater Launceston.
Over the weekend, the Bell Bay Water Treatment Plant was broken into, causing extensive damage with critical electrical and control equipment being stolen.
Vandals also broke into the Rocherlea reservoirs last week, lighting fires and accessing reservoir roofs.
TasWater General Manager Operations Brendan Windmeyer said they have reported both incidents to police.

“We want to remind the community that these sites are critical infrastructure and damaging them can have serious consequences including impacts to greater Launceston’s drinking water supply,” Windmeyer said.
The Rocherlea reservoirs supply Launceston with enough drinking water to fill 22 Olympic-sized swimming pools while the Bell Bay facility plays an essential role in TasWater’s real-time monitoring of water quality and sewage controls across Northern Tasmania.

“While these incidents have not affected our ability to provide essential services to the community, vandalism of critical operational depots is disappointing and puts unnecessary strain on our teams,” he said.
“We are working closely with police and assessing the damage to ensure the site is secure.”
Both facilities remain operational despite the attacks, with no disruption to water services across the region.
TasWater is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity around either site over recent weeks to contact Tasmania Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
