Two teenagers were thrown from an unregistered trail bike after a head-on crash with a car in Hobart’s eastern suburbs yesterday.
The collision on Duntroon Drive at Rokeby involved a 19-year-old unlicensed rider and his 17-year-old passenger. Only the passenger was wearing a helmet.
Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Penny Reardon said the crash “could have easily ended in tragedy”.
“Both the rider and pillion were ejected from the bike and with only the pillion wearing a helmet,” she said.
“It’s lucky neither were seriously hurt.” The car’s driver and passenger were not injured.
Police seized the bike and say the rider will face multiple traffic charges.
The crash was one of three serious incidents in the opening days of ‘Operation Full Stop’ – a new crackdown on dangerous driving in the area.
On Friday night, a motorcyclist was clocked at 150km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Brooker Highway at Derwent Park.
Police seized the 21-year-old’s bike for 28 days and laid charges. Hours later, two cars were clamped for 28 days after hooning at Cambridge Park.
One driver has been found, while police are still looking for the other.
“Police announced ‘Operation Full Stop’ last Friday and it’s disappointing that in the first two days after the launch, we had this dangerous and reckless incident,” Reardon said.
“Riding unlicensed and unregistered trailbikes on public roads, especially without proper safety gear is reckless and puts lives at risk.”
