The Simpsons theme song has blasted out across the Legislative Council chamber in Tasmania’s parliament tonight, leaving members struggling to keep a straight face.
MLCs are sitting late as they work through Labor’s bill to make Easter Sunday a public holiday in the state.
At around 9:42pm, as independent Murchison MLC Ruth Forrest was addressing the chamber on the Statutory Holidays Amendment Bill, the unmistakable opening of The Simpsons theme blared out.
Members appeared visibly puzzled before trying to contain their laughter.

Labor MLC Sarah Lovell, who is leading the bill through the chamber, was pictured behind Forrest smirking as the sound rang out.
Independent Elwick MLC Bec Thomas was also seen trying to contain her laughter.

A source told Pulse the noise was believed to have come from an MLC watching a social media reel during the sitting.
Update – 11:10pm: The bill has cleared the committee stage of the Legislative Council without amendment and is expected to face its final vote tomorrow.
