Over 5,000 people gathered in Launceston’s City Park on Sunday evening for the city’s Carols by Candlelight event.

The free community event, held from 6pm to 9pm, featured local performers and a special guest from the North Pole – Santa.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the event showcased the talent of local performers and was supported by Council staff and community groups.

“It’s been fantastic to see Council officers and Councillors working together to make this event possible,” he said.

“Particularly the efforts of Councillor Lindi McMahon and the Council’s Tourism and Events Team Leader Angie Hart who have been working behind the scenes on this initiative.”

The event was organised after the cancellation of a community-led carols event at the Silverdome just weeks before Christmas.
