Two 19-year-old women and a man have died after a head-on crash on the Bass Highway near Elizabeth Town on Friday afternoon.
The two women were driving a white Chery station wagon towards Launceston when it collided with a white Isuzu D-MAX towing a trailer near the Gannons Hill Road intersection around 2pm.
Both women died at the scene, along with a 51-year-old man who was a rear-seat passenger in the Isuzu.
The two other men in the Isuzu, both in their 40s, were left in a critical condition.
The driver was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Friday.
The front-seat passenger was first taken to the Launceston General Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Hobart Hospital on Saturday morning.
Tasmania Police Commander Marco Ghedini thanked the members of the public who stopped to give first aid at the scene.
He said early investigations indicated the vehicles collided head-on.
He said the cause was still being worked through and the three people who died were yet to be formally identified.
Ghedini described the scene as “complex” and said the impact of the crash was “profound”.
“Three families yesterday received the tragic news that they had lost a loved one,” he said on Saturday.
The crash brings Tasmania’s road toll for the year to 24, compared to 30 at the same time last year.
Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage or information to come forward.
