After years of holding underground raves in unconventional locations, Psy-On-Events is turning their attention to hosting its biggest licensed event yet, claiming it will be Hobart’s biggest indoor electronic music event.
PSYON, a hardcore and industrial techno event, will take over Mac 02 on Hobart’s waterfront on September 5, with a capacity of 3,000 people.
Four European DJs – DNNS, Phat Otiz, Gehlektek and Vido – will travel to Hobart for the event, with organiser Oliver Pybus saying it will be their only Australian performance.
“They’re not playing anywhere else in Australia,” Pybus told Pulse.
Pybus said the event was expected to attract at least 1,000 attendees, with capacity for up to 3,000 people.
“If we can have this 3,000 people there, then that is hectically good,” he said.
The event marks a shift for Psy-On-Events, which has previously held a number of unauthorised gatherings across Hobart.
The group previously held an event in Bidencopes Lane that attracted hundreds of people before police shut it down following a public complaint.
The crew also ran an event inside the Hobart Rivulet tunnels that was shut down by police.
Following those incidents, Hobart City Council approved a controlled trial allowing raves at the Town Hall Underground, saying it wanted to provide young people with a safe, regulated space rather than push events into unauthorised settings.
Pybus said PSYON would be fully licensed and restricted to people aged 18 and over.
“All the rule books have been ticked,” he said.
“For us, that’s a big deal.”
He said the group initially explored holding the event at Centrepoint car park but moved to Mac 02 after that option was not approved.
The event will feature a central DJ booth, moving lighting rig and surround sound system.
Pybus said Tasmania’s rave culture set it apart from the mainland.
“It’s got a better culture, I think, of how raves and parties used to be more than mainstream,” he said.
Pybus will run the event alongside his partner Madeline Goldsmith and his father with production support from PMLS.
He said underground events would continue alongside larger shows.
