A young man has had the car he was driving clamped after being caught at 156km/h on the Midland Highway, near the V8 Supercars event at Symmons Plains.
The 19-year-old from Bridgewater was stopped by police around 3:30pm on Sunday as officers conducted mobile speed checks close to the motorsport venue in Tasmania’s north.
Police said the gold Ford Falcon sedan was travelling north near the Powranna Road intersection at 46km/h over the 110km/h limit.
When officers intercepted the car, they found the driver was unlicensed and subject to bail conditions not to drive.
He was arrested at the scene and charged with unlicensed driving, speeding and breaching police bail.
The car was clamped for 28 days.
“The incident serves as a warning that any driver travelling at 45km/h or more over the speed limit is subject to having the vehicle confiscated or clamped, even if it is not theirs,” a police spokesperson said.
Police said there was a strong mobile presence on the Midland Highway across the weekend to coincide with the Supercars round.
“Pleasingly, the majority of road users were seen doing the right thing,” the spokesperson added.
