A “torrential downpour” has left a Tasmanian school “under water”, prompting parents to be called in to pick up their children this afternoon.
Devonport High School was inundated by water shortly after 1pm on Wednesday as a large storm, complete with heavy rain and lighting, passed over the north-west coast.
The nearby Devonport Airport weather station had only recorded 4.0mm of rain between 9am and 1:17pm, which quickly jumped by 8.4mm to 12.4mm in less than 30 minutes.
In a statement on the their Facebook page, the school said “no one could have anticipated such a torrential downpour”.
“Due to a recent downpour over a very short timeframe, the school is currently under water in isolated areas and without electricity.”
Students were moved into the gymnasium, which is understood to have been unaffected by the adverse weather.
“We understand some students are concerned that they could not collect their belongings from their locker, however, please be assured their personal items are safe.”
The Department of Education, Children and Young People have been contacted for comment.
