The Mayor of the West Coast Council has thrown his support behind calls urging the Prime Minister to support the future of the Tasmanian salmon industry once and for all.
Shane Pitt said the recent visit from Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Peter Dutton over the weekend was an “incredible show of support” for the west coast.
Dutton visited salmon farm workers in Strahan on Sunday, where he called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to “come out and to be honest” around the future of the industry.
“It means a hell of a lot to have the Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton and the Premier Jeremy Rockliff spend the night in Strahan, get out on Macquarie Harbour and hear first-hand from the workers who are worried about their job,” Pitt said.
“We are feeling the love, but that doesn’t put food on the table – what we need is for the Prime Minister to stop the political games and end the uncertainty for Macquarie Harbour salmon workers right now.”
Pitt echoed a statement from Dutton, who accused the Prime Minister of making “dishonest” comments in favour of the salmon industry.
“It’s all well and good for the Prime Minister to say he stands with us. But, this is the same Prime Minister who told Australians that ‘my word is my bond’ on tax cuts and then he broke his promise,” Pitt said.
“I again extend our invitation for the Prime Minister to come to the West Coast, to see Macquarie Harbour, meet with the hard-working locals who rely on our world class salmon industry and end the uncertainty.”
