Will Thomson of AJR Construct has been named Tasmania’s Apprentice of the Year at the Master Builders Tasmania awards, held at PW1 in Hobart tonight.
Judges said Thomson took on responsibilities well beyond what would normally be expected of an apprentice, with his work spanning complex commercial developments and challenging remote projects in alpine environments.
He supervised the reconstruction of Hydro Tasmania’s Poatina Creek Weir, coordinating onsite activities and multiple stakeholders.
In his acceptance speech, Thomson reflected on the realities of completing a four-year apprenticeship.
“I think we can all agree that getting through four years of an apprenticeship is not all that easy,” he said.
“It can be challenging both physically and mentally and there are times when it plays on your emotions too.”
Thomson praised AJR Construct directors Adam and Astrid Ritson for fostering an environment that encouraged growth.
He also thanked his wife for her support through long stretches of time spent working away from home.
“There’s been a fair bit of time which has been spent away, working locally and on jobs afar,” he said.
Master Builders Tasmania chief executive Jenna Cairney said Thomson was a standout representative of the industry.
“Will is an outstanding ambassador for this industry,” Cairney said.
“He represents the next generation of skilled, capable and community minded construction professionals.”
Cairney said tonight’s awards event is a boost for Hobart businesses, with more than 700 people travelling into the city for the night.
“They bought suits at Routleys, they had drinks at the Customs House, they filled hotel rooms, restaurants and taxis right across Hobart and Salamanca,” she said.
“That is small business backing small business.”
“When building and construction is going well, everybody around it goes well.”
Winners from the state awards will go on to represent Tasmania at the national awards.
