The speed limit on Algona Road in Kingston is being dropped from 90km/h to 80km/h after a string of crashes prompted a safety review.
The Commissioner for Transport approved the change following an assessment by the Department of State Growth.
The review was sparked by a request from a member of the public.
State Growth’s assessment found a high crash history on the road, with 13 reported crashes in the past five years.

Those incidents included one fatal crash, one causing serious injury, two causing minor injury and four requiring first aid.
The department also noted the road features some large curves with limited sight distances.

“Even small reductions in speed can result in considerable safety benefits,” the department said.
“A safer speed limit on Algona Road will reduce the risk of crashes and improve safety for all road users and people who live in the area.”
New speed limit signs are expected to be installed next week.
The changed limit will come into effect once those signs are in place.
