A blank wall along one of Hobart’s busiest eastern shore commuter routes is set for a $40,000 makeover.

The Clarence City Council is calling on artists to transform the large exterior wall of the Eastside Squash Centre on Cambridge Road into a bold public mural, with $40,000 on offer for the commission.

The fee covers everything from concept and design through to installation, including scaffolding, equipment, insurance and a graffiti-resistant coating.

While a public art working group will assess the applications, Mayor Brendan Blomeley said he already has a vision for what the mural could look like.

“Although the applications will be judged by a public art working group, personally, I’d love to see an image that is quintessentially Clarence,” he told Pulse.

“That is, something that represents the very best of the eastern shore, highlighting our amazing communities, ranging from our rural farming communities, right through to our seaside villages and everything in between.”

“Our natural environment, our sporting facilities and our majestic Derwent River would also feature in my ideal public artwork.”

Blomeley said the project is a chance to bring something fresh to the suburb.

“We’re always looking at ways to enhance our public spaces and this is a chance for artists to help shape the look and feel of the area,” he said.

Artists can take either a literal or conceptual approach, but the work must fully cover the wall or create the illusion of full coverage through its design.

Expressions of interest close on May 6, with three shortlisted artists to be announced on May 27 and each paid $1,000 to refine their proposal.

The final artist will be selected on June 26, with the completed mural expected to be finished by late August or early September.
