Civil Contractors Federation Tasmania boss Andrew Winch will run as an independent candidate for Glenorchy City Council at the upcoming local government elections.
Winch, who leads the state’s peak civil construction body, announced his candidacy on Friday.
He said Glenorchy was a great place to live and run a business, but he wanted to help make it even better.
“I’m passionate about Glenorchy. I’ve fought for this community for most of my life and I believe it’s time to stand up to help make our city even better,” he said.
“That’s why I’m nominating for council.”
Winch said he had lived in the area for nearly 40 years, raised a family there and started businesses locally.
He outlined three priorities focused on making Glenorchy a better place to live and do business, while improving council services.
On housing and liveability, he called for more housing options, better access to health services and safer communities.
On business, Winch backed encouraging investment, development and jobs, improving infrastructure and cutting what he called “unnecessary red tape”.
He also promised to keep rates “under control”, maintain roads and footpaths and deliver value for money.
“I’m running because I believe I can bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the work council is already doing,” he said.
“I’ll be a strong and independent voice for the whole community and I’m not afraid to stand up for Glenorchy and make sure we get our fair share.”
