A truck releasing diesel fuel into Burnie’s stormwater network has prompted a ‘polluted water’ alert at the town’s beach.
According to the Burnie City Council, the incident was triggered by a delivery truck at the nearby Target store.
“Due to the impacts of a diesel spill, swimming is not currently recommended in the area of West Beach,” the council said.
“Those in the area may notice some odour. The whole beach is not impacted, just the western side between the playground and the entrance to the beach.”
The affected drain was flushed with help from the Environment Protection Authority and the Tasmania Fire Service, resulting in the discharge of contaminated water at West Beach.
“Council will notify the public as soon as the polluted water notification is revoked,” they said.
