The federal government has endorsed the master plan for Hobart’s Macquarie Point precinct, clearing the final non-financial hurdle under its funding agreement with Tasmania.

The decision locks in Canberra’s $240 million contribution to the urban renewal project, which includes the proposed $1.13 billion roofed multi-purpose stadium for the Tasmania Devils.

The Macquarie Point Precinct Master Plan and Housing Plan have both been approved, meeting what the federal government described as the final non-financial milestones.

Focus will now shift to financial delivery milestones.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the project would deliver more than a football ground.

“Macquarie Point will become a world-class, year-round destination for Tasmanians and bring a significant boost to the state’s tourism sector,” she said.

“The precinct will be more than a well-deserved home for the Devils – it will create new housing, improve transport links adjacent to the Hobart CBD and upgrade the wharves.”

The master plan outlines a mixed-use precinct featuring the stadium, public plazas, hospitality venues and arts and cultural spaces, while maintaining port operations and Antarctic research.

The housing component includes affordable, essential worker and social housing at Regatta Point, along with a revitalised waterfront and new commercial spaces.

Tasmanian Labor senator Carol Brown said the housing plan would support workers in nearby health facilities.

“This is a site that has been underused for years and this plan is about finally unlocking it for the people of Hobart, with housing, public space and a waterfront that actually gets used,” she said.

Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Minister Eric Abetz said the endorsement sent a clear signal to industry.

“This entire project will be distinctly Tasmanian, bringing together sports, entertainment, hospitality, accommodation and more into what will be a brand new cultural and community precinct for the whole state,” he said.

“With this next step complete it signals to the business community, to hoteliers, to builders, to tourism operators and more that now is the time to get ready.”
