The Federal Government is set to approve funding for a new multi-purpose stadium in Hobart, according to Government insiders.
The $240 million shortfall will be filled by the Albanese government, clearing the final hurdle for Tasmania to be awarded the 19th AFL licence.
The stadium, which is expected to cost around $750 million, will have a capacity of 23,000 and will be built in Macquarie Point. However, it has been reported that the stadium will not include a roof.
While an official announcement is expected within the next week, the AFL say they are still waiting for confirmation from the Federal Labor government ahead of the May 9 budget.
The approval of funding will pave the way for the AFL and its 18 presidents to approve the 19th licence, bringing Tasmania into the national league.
