The remaining piece of the William Crowther statue in Hobart’s Franklin Square has been removed today, several months after the monument was cut off at the ankles.
The City of Hobart used a crane to lift the feet, which have been kept under a wooden box on the plinth, on Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson confirmed they will soon be reattached to the main portion of the statue.
“Temporary signage will soon be displayed in Franklin Square explaining the removal process,” the spokesperson said.
A “permanent interpretive element” through the Crowther Reinterpreted project will then be commissioned and installed.
The statue was originally set to be removed after a decision by the Hobart City Council, which was appealed.
But on the eve of the tribunal verdict, which upheld the council’s decision, the statue was sawn off at the ankles.
The details of the permanent interpretive element are yet to be finalised.
