Glenorchy’s long-awaited pool refurbishment has cleared the 70% mark, with works on track to finish this year and reopen the facility before summer.
Mayor Sue Hickey told the Glenorchy City Council meeting on Monday that the multi-million refurbishment project remained on time and within budget.
“The renovation works at the pool are now over 70% complete and remain on time and within budget,” Hickey said.
The Glenorchy War Memorial Pool was closed in 2023 after an independent report flagged serious safety issues at the 60-year-old facility.

Hutchinson Builders began the repair job in August 2025, backed by a $5 million state government grant.
Hickey said construction was substantially complete on the change rooms, with the certificate of occupancy inspection underway.

The accessible ramp, structural floors and grandstand stairs have also been finished.
Core works on the plant room are done, including flooring, service connections, switchboard, ventilation and lighting.
Pool heating installation is progressing and the toddler pool water supply has been upgraded.
A new changing places accessible facility has been delivered and is being installed on site.

Hickey confirmed the ageing waterslide had been removed and would not be replaced.
“As an ageing piece of infrastructure the slide was deemed unsafe and had to be removed,” she said.
“The cost to replace the slide was over $1 million which we simply did not have and it wasn’t feasible for this project, which is already at $6.5 million.”
The space has been turned into a family-friendly area with a barbecue shelter and grass picnic lawn.

The council is separately lobbying state and federal governments for $84 million to fund a full long-term redevelopment of the site, which would deliver indoor and outdoor pools, a wellness hall, gym and cafe.
