The Glenorchy District Football Club has been stripped of four premiership points after breaching the player points cap in a senior men’s match last month.

AFL Tasmania confirmed the sanction on Thursday after completing its investigation into Glenorchy’s compliance with the SFL player points system policy.

The club fielded a team worth 42 points in its premier league senior men’s match against Lauderdale on May 23, exceeding the competition’s 40-point limit.

Lauderdale has been awarded four premiership points as a result.

The breach centred on the points value assigned to player Nelson Beikoff-Smart.

Glenorchy submitted a reassessment application for Beikoff-Smart on the morning of the match, seeking a reduction in his points value.

However, AFL Tasmania said the club was told before the game that his points would stay at five for that match and no reduction had been approved.

“Prior to the match, the club was explicitly advised that, given the timeframes, the player’s points would remain at five for the match, with no approval for a reduction granted and that a full assessment would be completed in the coming days,” AFL Tasmania said.

The governing body said reassessment applications are typically assessed over several days.

Beikoff-Smart’s application was reviewed in the days after the match and was ultimately knocked back.

His points value stayed at five, consistent with the previous six senior matches he’d played.

AFL Tasmania said it had publicly acknowledged the club’s awareness of the situation.

“Fairness across the competition and the long-term health of the game must come first and our role is to protect the sustainability and balance of the entire football ecosystem by ensuring rules are applied consistently and responsibly across all clubs,” AFL Tasmania said.
