A Greater Hobart Mayor is calling for her council area not to be forgotten about during the period of election promises leading up to the state election later this month.
When asked if the council was lobbying for a new Aquatic Centre for the region at a meeting on Monday night, Kingborough Mayor Paula Wredit told councillors that they had yet to secure funding for anything during the campaign.
“Kingborough seems to be overlooked by all parties and candidates when it comes to funding commitments,” she said.
“At this point in time there have been no funding commitments provided to the Kingborough area that we would benefit from.”
The Mayor pointed to a $5 million injection into the Glenorchy Pool and other facilities, particularly in the north of the state, as examples of the southern suburb missing out.
“We are regarded by many people in government and many aspiring candidates to be a more wealthy area and so it is very difficult for Kingborough to get any traction for anything … during elections,” she said.
“That’s a great disappointment for the community. I can assure them it’s not for lack of us trying.”
She said meetings were scheduled for this week with political candidates to discuss proposals in the hopes of securing a positive outcome for the region.
The need for an Aquatic Facility is an urgent one, according to some Kingborough ratepayers who don’t want to travel to Hobart to use the pool, however the estimated price tag to complete it is believed to be “around $60 million”.
