Police caught 40 drivers breaking the law in just one hour during a traffic operation in the Hobart CBD today.
Officers from Southern Road Policing Services ran red light and mobile phone checks across the city centre, catching 13 drivers using their phones and 27 running yellow or red lights.
Sergeant Andy McShane said the results were disappointing.
“I was hoping to stand in the CBD for an hour and leave without issuing a single ticket, but to have my team issue 40 infringement notices is clearly unacceptable,” he said.
“Too many drivers are complacent about their safety and the safety of other road users.”
McShane said officers would keep running high-visibility operations across the greater Hobart area.
“We will be back in the CBD and greater Hobart areas regularly until we see a change in driver attitudes and behaviour,” he said.
Police said distractions such as mobile phone use significantly increase the risk of crashes, while failing to stop at traffic signals puts all road users at risk.
“Drivers are urged to remain focused, obey traffic signals and make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel,” McShane said.
