More than 90 swimmers will take to the pool at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre for a 12-hour relay marathon aiming to raise $35,000 for Australians living with multiple sclerosis.

The 2026 Hobart MS Mega Swim marks the event’s 10th year in the city on September 19, with teams swimming in continuous relays from 8:30am to 8:30pm.

More than 37,756 Australians live with MS, a complex and unpredictable condition with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Tasmania has the highest rate of MS in Australia.

Funds raised go towards MS Go for Gold Scholarships, financial assistance programs and services for people living with the condition.

The scholarships help recipients pursue personal goals across categories including personal expression, education and wellbeing.

Suchitha Dinah Isaac, a 2025 scholarship winner, said the funding opened doors that the disease had closed.

Paramedic Anna Chernov is a previous participant in the swim

“The MS Go for Gold Scholarship will allow me to pursue my passion in filmmaking without the physical limitations that have held me back, give me the ability I lost, take on projects with confidence and tell my story to the world,” she said.

The MS Mega Challenge event series was founded in 2001 by Paralympian Carol Cooke AM and has grown into one of the fastest expanding community events in Australia.

Swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome, whether they complete one lap or 50, with teams only needing to keep one person in the water at all times.

MS Plus chief executive John Blewonski said participants would be making a real difference.

Hobart is home to the MS Research Flagship based at the University of Tasmania

“By taking part in the MS Mega Swim, you will be making a tangible impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by multiple sclerosis,” he said.

“Not only will you be making a positive difference, but you will also experience a sense of accomplishment and community spirit.”
