The iconic Ulverstone fish and chip shop long known as Pedro’s is up for sale, with the building and business offered as a walk-in, walk-out package.
The waterfront takeaway on Wharf Road is now operating as the Sail Away Cafe but the sale includes the rights to the Pedro’s name, meaning a new owner could revive the original branding.
The asking price is $550,000+ GST and stock.
Harcourts agent Jakub Lehman said the listing went live on Monday and he expects strong interest.
“It’s a pretty famous restaurant,” he told Pulse.
“It’s one of the only ones that I know of here in Tassie that sits in the water which is pretty remarkable.”
The business was purchased in 2020 and later passed to the current owner, the son of the original buyers.
He stripped the menu back to its core, ditching additions like souvlakis to refocus on fish and chips.
“And since he’s done that, it’s been a raging success again,” Lehman said.
The sale includes all plant and equipment worth more than $50,000, cool rooms, freezers and a coffee machine.
Lehman said existing staff would remain with the business if the new owner wanted them.
He said the Pedro’s name could be a drawcard for the right buyer.
“To someone local or to someone within Tasmania that knows Pedro’s and knows what it’s about and knows the history behind the actual shop itself, it would be pretty iconic to take it back to Pedro’s and the sign’s still up there,” he said.
The property sits alongside walking and cycling tracks with river frontage, positioned to capture locals, tourists and passing traffic on the north-west coast.
“Opportunities to purchase a commercial property and established business with this level of local recognition, history and waterfront appeal simply don’t present themselves often,” the listing says.
The dine-in restaurant at the back of the site, Strait Off The Boat Seafood, Bar and Restaurant, is a separate business and is not impacted by the sale.
