Launceston Hospital to get new helipad

Launceston General Hospital (LGH) will soon have a new helicopter pad thanks to funding secured in the 2023-2024 state budget. The $15 million project is set to be built on top of the existing car park on the western side of the LGH site, replacing the current ground-level concrete pad in nearby Ockerby Gardens.

This new addition will provide patients with access to safe and efficient aero-medical transportation in Launceston, according to Premier and Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff.

“This funding will make sure patients can get the right care, in the right place, at the right time,” he said. The new helipad will be equipped to operate in difficult weather conditions, providing additional flight path options.

Treasurer Michael Ferguson believes the project is an example of how the 2023-24 state budget is prioritising the delivery of new and upgraded critical health infrastructure.

“We are targeting every dollar to get things done, building a strong economy and a safe, caring community,” he said.

The helipad will also strengthen Ambulance Tasmania’s ability to provide critical care and retrieval across the state.

Ambulance Tasmania chief executive Jordan Emery said the new helipad would provide direct access for patients brought in by the ambulance helicopter to the LGH, allowing them to be transferred directly to the emergency care they need.
