Metro has been forced to suspend bus services into two suburbs north of Hobart after the return of “dangerous rock-throwing incidents”.

The decision to partially suspend services on Route 522 into Gagebrook and Herdsmans Cove from 8pm each night comes after concerns raised by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union Tasmanian Branch.

Under the changes, buses on the route will now start and end their journeys at Cove Hill Fair after 8pm.

“This partial suspension will be effective from tonight and will remain in place until further notice as we continue to monitor the situation,” a Metro spokesperson said.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to monitor safety incidents and prioritise the safety of our drivers and customers.”

It comes less than a month after services in the area were restored, following previous attacks.

Tasmania Police Inspector Jim Semmens said such incidents of rock-throwing were “very dangerous”.

“Throwing rocks at any vehicle is unacceptable and dangerous, particularly in the case of heavy vehicles like busses as it places the driver, passengers and members of the community in danger,” he said.
