Motorcyclist charged after allegedly riding at 145km/h in 70km/h zone

The alleged high-speed riding was detected on Tea Tree Road at around 12:50pm

A motorcyclist has been charged after allegedly riding at 145km/h in a 70km/h zone in Tasmania’s south.

Road policing officers were patrolling the Brighton area on Sunday when they allegedly detected the “high-powered motorcycle” on Tea Tree Road at around 12:50pm.

Police said they identified the rider at the time and officers stopped the motorcycle a short time later at Pontville.

The man, who is in his early 40s, was arrested and charged with high-speed driving. His motorcycle was seized.

He is due to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in January.

Police said the rider’s alleged actions “placed himself and other road users at risk”.

“Travelling at high speed dramatically reduces a rider’s ability to respond to changing road conditions and increases the likelihood that any crash will result in serious injury or death,” police said.

“If you see reckless or dangerous driving on Tasmanian roads, contact police on 131 444. If it is an emergency, call 000 (Triple Zero).”
